Yoga's Health Benefits

Yoga for your mind and body

Yoga is an incredible system for your total health and well being; a 5,000-year-old tradition with roots in ancient India. It is based on the philosophy laid down in the Yoga Sutras of Patañjali, a text authored in South Asia sometime between 200 B.C. and 500 B.C.. The sutras offer a program of study for the individual seeking unification, or “yoga.” Mastery comes when the seeker “resides in his true nature.”  It has evolved over time offering a great variety of styles and benefits. Yoga styles range from the more athletic, such as Flow and Ashtanga, which link and connect poses in flowing sequences that are intended to build up heat and intensity in the student, to others, like Iyengar and Viniyoga, which are decidedly slower, bringing focus to each individual pose or asana. Then there are the more meditative yogas, where a focus is placed on the breath to help students gain clarity and calm in both mind and body.  I teach a form of Hatha Yoga that focuses on using the mind to develop greater concentration and focus, keeping in the present moment.  We incorporate flow techniques by connecting the breath with movement.  We follow the same general sequence in each class.  Finally, we focus on acceptance - accepting ourselves, our bodies, others and anything that comes into our lives.

Deepak Chopra & David Simon wrote that "yoga offers much more than just a way to exercise the body: it gives us a way to enter...the spirit...to connect with our divine being. As we deepen our practice, we get glimpses of our true Self and dip into the profound peace of the soul".
